SRINAGAR, Nov 20: Four terrorists affiliated with Kashmir-based terror group, Hizbul Mujahideen, were killed in a pre-dawn encounter in the Nadigam village of South Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Internet has been completely shut-down in South Kashmir to prevent spread of fake news about killings of civilians. An elite para-commando achieved martyrdom while another one was critically injured when the terrorists opened fire at the security forces. The encounter was followed by violent clashes between the civilians and security forces.

Three civilians were injured during the clashes and they were rushed to Shopian  district hospital from where they were immediately referred to SHMS hospital in Srinagar for specialised treatment. The encounter took place a few days after the terror group circulated videos over social media of the execution of the informers working for security forces in the district.

Reports said a joint team of army’s 34RR, 23 PARA and SOG Shopian cordoned off Nadigam around 2 AM following inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area. As the joint team of forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired a volley of bullets, they said. The forces retaliated, leading to a gunfight in which three soldiers were wounded, said a police source.

He identified the injured soldiers as Sepoy Shailender Singh of 34 RR, Lance Naik Somveer of 23 PARA and Havaldar Bhupinder Singh of 23 PARA. The source said that one of the critically wounded soldiers was shifted to 92 Base hospital in Srinagar where he succumbed. “As a search operation was going on, search party was confronted with bullets fired by hiding terrorists. In the initial exchange of fire, a para-commando identified as Head Constable Vijay of 23 Para sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment, where he succumbed to injuries,” a police statement said.

The four terrorists who were killed during the encounter have been identified as Inam-ul-Haq, resident of Motjan Shopian, Mehraj-u-din of Drawnee village of Shopian, Abid Nazi of Padapora village of Shopian, and Basharat Nengroo of Chotigam village of Shopian district. The killing of these four terrorists was followed by violent protests with youth taking to streets and trying to march towards the encounter site. Police in a handout said that to quell the protests, they were left with no option but to fire teargas shells, pellets and live ammunition to disperse the crowds.

Subsequently, three civilians were injured which included two girls. The injured have been identified as Minha Ahsan daughter of Mohammad Ahsan, Rafi Jan daughter of Ghulam Mohammad and Mohammad Yawar Bhat.  “Two of them have bullet injuries and one has a serious abdomen injury. We have referred them to Srinagar,” said a Doctor.
