64.1% turnout in final phase of Panchayat polls in Leh

Leh, Nov 24: The third and final phase of Panchayat elections held at five blocks including Chushot, Thiksey, Leh, Nimmo and Saspol ended successfully in Leh district today.

The overall turnout of vote has come around 64.1% with Chuchot 69.1%, Thiksey 63.9%, Leh 56.4%, Nimmo 62.6% and Saspol 65.9% votes.

District Panchayat Election Officer/DC, Leh Avny Lavasa inspected polling stations in Palam-Pharka, Stok and Chuchot. She interacted with the polling staff, especially with the female employees assigned on polling duty and enquired about the votes cast and other facilities. She also interacted with the candidates and wished them good luck for the results. At Chuchot, DC attended the counting procedure of votes along with the RO and other polling staff. It was for the first time that entire polling team was comprised of female employees at 29 polling stations and total 99 female employees were deployed on election duty for the third phase of panchayat election.

It is pertinent to mention here that there are 95 panchayat halqas in Leh district out of which during the Panchayat elections 39 Sarpanches were elected uncontested and for the remaining 56 seats of sarpanch elections were conducted in different blocks except for Sarpanch seat in Korzok that remain vacant due to non polling. Similarly, for total 687 panch wards in the district, 642 panches were elected uncontested, for 23 panch seats elections were conducted and 22 panch ward remained vacant.
