JAMMU, Jan 15: Chief of the Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Naravane on Wednesday made another political comment and asserted that abrogation of Article 370 was a historic step and it will help Jammu and Kashmir integrate with mainstream India.

“Article 370 abrogation has disrupted proxy war by our western neighbour,” said Army Chief on Army Day. General Naravane also said, “We have zero-tolerance towards militancy. We have many options to counter those who promote terror. We will not hesitate to use them. We will respond in equal measure.”

The Indian Army marked the 72nd Army Day with a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in Delhi. The event was graced by Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Mukund Naravane, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria along with India first Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat.

Army Day is celebrated to mark Lt Gen K M Carriappa taking over as commander-in-chief of the Indian Army in 1949 from General Francis Butcher, the last British commander-in-chief of India. The day also honours soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for the country.  The main Army parade is held at Cariappa Parade ground in Delhi, where Bravery awards and Sena medals are distributed on this day. The country also pays tribute to the army at ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’ at India Gate.
