Not Being Us, a random scribble!

Neeru Kaul

This summer something crept in my mind….and I decided….to be something that seems very bizarre to be…..This summer, I decided to be a Human. And the responsible culprits who metamorphosed me into this were the ants in my kitchen, and unusual increase in the number of avian visitors in my balcony both surpassing the constant gradual 2 year efforts of my lame stray dog who has made my balcony his nocturnal home and has been visiting since two years.

Ants because they kept poking in the hollow tube of my kitchen tap for a mere drop of water that would flow only to flood them into the kitchen drain each time someone, unknown to their presence opens the tap . Even the lizards are frequent visitors to my kitchen wash basin. Birds….because …by adjusting their beaks in all possible angles kept trying to suck in even the miniscule droplet of water falling from the leaking tap of the washbasin in my balcony. The leak that has been an annoyance for me has somewhere to some degree proven to be a blessing for them atleast.

With the soaring temperatures that is on it’s way to break all it’s previous records, I noticed the heat this summer has become the catalyst in this reaction, and these otherwise invisible creatures corrupted to metamorphose me into a Human, a rare species in our beautiful mechanised, self loving world. And today I see myself keeping bowls of water in my balcony, one low lying for my avian culprits beside the other deeper bowl already kept for my little lame dog.

I was wondering how many more have they corrupted or metamorphosed, this summer…these little minuscule creatures. Today I saw a crow trying to peek in to the hollow of a road side tap trying to catch on some H2O but only on a newspaper. I wondered how many people he corrupted. And somewhere these culprits of mine want me to spread this process of metamorphosis. Did you by any means get affected?

This summer let’s keep a bowl of water for these birds and minuscule creatures in or outside of our homes wherever it is accessible to them… Sometimes, it’s not so bad to be something we are not–The Humans.
